We recently employed a woman at the restaurant who was from California. I asked her if she spoke a lot of Spanish, seeing as how she lived in one of the most ethnically diverse states in the Union. She said, and I quote, "oh no, we don't encourage that sort of thing. If you're in AMERICA, you should speak english." I thought she was incredibly close-minded. I'm not at all like her. I started this blog because I think these misspellings are absolutely adorable. And the Latinos aren't the only ones making the mistakes. It's a shame my coworkers can't film videos of me trying to give them directions in spanish, because I'm sure it would keep anyone Hispanic laughing for days. My grammatical errors are probably too numerous to count, and I have a tendency to plug in words I know for words I don't know, hoping that they convey a similar meaning. Yeah, on the surface these photographs are funny, but I think what it's really about is the struggle to fit in with each other and adapt. It's about total immersion.
